About the Event

Virtual Shoe Strike is the newest initiative of West Lafayette Climate Strike, a student led organization based in West Lafayette, IN. The goal of this action is to continue bringing awareness to the climate crisis, which is directly related to the systemic racism and inequality present today. We will also be advocating for a repeal of the Tippecanoe County wind farm ban and the implementation of a satisfactory solar ordinance.

Shoe Strike will have two aspects: our shoe drive and our virtual strike.

For our shoe drive, we will be collecting dozens of pairs of gently used shoes from the community throughout the month of July. The week of the strike, we will be laying the shoes out in an empty parking lot surrounded by our banners and posters. The shoes will symbolize the students and community members who are standing up for their uncertain futures even while we cannot gather. We will be creating a video with footage of the shoes which will be shown at the virtual event. The shoes will be donated to a local nonprofit following the strike. You can find information on where to donate shoes on our Facebook group: West Lafayette Climate Strikes.

For our virtual climate strike, we will gather via Zoom to hear from students and adult allies throughout the state and in the West Lafayette community. We will highlight intersectional environmentalism, the symbolism and power behind a shoe strike, the necessity of repealing the wind ban, and more. We encourage participants to bring a climate strike poster/sign for a photo op! Register for the virtual strike here. We would appreciate this being done prior to the event to give us time to send out links.
